Biting the Bullet

Should guns be available to publicly buy in the UK? Hmmm...

Well, there are many good reasons why they currently aren’t. For example, there are

currently only about 0.03 gun-related deaths per 100,000 British people in the UK annually. But allowing guns to be available for commercial purchase would cause this number to rise ten-fold; the US’ figure of gun related deaths per 100,000 is about 4.62 - massive in comparison - and is set to rise if their gun laws change, as seems to be the ‘will of the people’ at present, and the current government, on the other side of the Atlantic.

But, while they may not seem immediately obvious to us, there can be positives to letting guns be available to everyone. With armed robberies on the rise, it would be comforting for people to feel safer in their own homes, knowing that they could defend themselves from any intruder.

But, to my mind, the cons of the weapons’ implementation into peoples’ daily lives comprehensively outweigh the pros and silence their arguments: with just the pull of a trigger, there would be an enormous spike in homicides. This meteoric increase would hugely alter how much the NHS would have to spend on certain areas of healthcare to allow it to continue providing the population with the free service it needs. The NHS would almost certainly make us pay some - if not all – of the price, and cause a seismic shift in policy and funding. They would need to expand hospitals and build new ones in order to cope with the surge in gun-related incidents, which would cost taxpayers far more money than they already pay the government.

All in all, I think guns should not be available to purchase in the UK. The country would become far less safe and the inflated monetary and healthcare expense would be far too costly for our nation. No, we’re alright as we are, doing things the British way.
