Liverpool Born & Bred

The city of Liverpool is where I was born and bred. I know the area inside out and wouldn’t miss it for the world.

There are several aspects of Liverpool and the surrounding area I would like to share with you. As you are probably aware, Liverpool is home to the famous band ‘The Beatles’. Clearly, their music has influenced generations and their music continues to be popular many, many years later; a fact that all ‘Scousers’ are proud of. Additionally, there is a ‘Beatles Story’ museum located on the Royal Albert Dock, which is also the largest collection of A-listed buildings in the UK.

In fact, Liverpool and the surrounding area boasts a number of other UK and World Records. For example, the first Intercity Railway in the UK ran between Liverpool and Manchester. At the Liverpool end, Wapping tunnel can be found which is the very first tunnel to be bored under a city in the world. Interestingly, it was originally used as a goods extension to the booming docks in the city at the time of the industrial revolution. The tunnel still exists however, it has been disused for several decades.

Size wise, the largest record-breaking feature is a part of the natural landscape. This is the River Mersey, the cleanest river in the UK, and this is a fact that often comes as a surprise. Following the Mersey northwards, we pass its mouth and onwards up the coast to the village of Formby. Formby beach boasts the second longest tidal range in the country, after the River Severn estuary, and is home to the UK’s largest site of Red Squirrels.

Talking of animals, the coastal area by Formby is also the home of the incredibly rare Natter-jack toad. Oh, and if all that wasn’t enough, it’s also the former home of footballer Steven Gerrard, of former Snooker player John Parrot, and, most importantly, my family’s home as well. I thoroughly recommend visiting the area at some point, particularly in the summer months.

The UK has so many great cities to go and visit, all competing for our business, our interest and our love. But I ask you, perhaps unexpectedly, to consider Liverpool. It has so many unexpected surprises to offer you. I can’t wait for my next visit.
